Welcome to the homepage of Maryknoll Shotokan Karate Club, an affiliate of Shotokan Karate of America (SKA), a nonprofit organization dedicated to teaching traditional karate in the United States since 1955.

Maryknoll Karate Club was founded in 1963 by Tsutomu Ohshima, then Maryknoll's Japanese teacher, and John Teramoto, an eighth grade student at Maryknoll Japanese Catholic School. Mr. Ohshima graduated from Tokyo's Waseda University where he was a pupil of Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of modern-day karate who introduced karate to main-land Japan from Okinawa. Following in the footsteps of Master Funakoshi, Mr. Ohshima introduced and spread karate throughout the United States, founded SKA, and established Shotokan karate schools world-wide. Fortunately, one of Mr. Ohshima's stops on this journey was Maryknoll Japanese Catholic School.

Over forty-five years later, Maryknoll Karate is one of the oldest dojos established by Mr. Ohshima within SKA, the United States and the rest of the world. Under the continued guidance of Mr. Ohshima and Maryknoll's senior black belts, Maryknoll Karate's aspiration is to provide rigorous karate training in the form and tradition as handed down to us by Mr. Ohshima and Master Funakoshi.
